Moniruzzaman, a farm entrepreneur from Satjan village in Dimla upazila, Nilphamari, grows malta, orange and seasonal vegetables on four bighas. After all costs, his net profit is about Tk 6 lakh to Tk 7 lakh a year.
For vegetables he uses mulching: the beds are covered with special plastic sheeting, which holds soil moisture, controls weeds and cuts the cost of care. His sprinkler system sprays water like rain, which spreads it evenly and reduces the labour of irrigation.
He started with an orchard of 250 malta trees and later added orange. In 2025 he began growing seasonal vegetables on mulch in the gaps in the orchard. Four cucumber crops a year have added to his income, and because one crop's income follows another, he depends less on any single crop.
He now sells malta at Tk 70 to Tk 80 a kilo and orange at about Tk 150, with regular income from cucumber and other vegetables.
The agriculture department gave him malta saplings, fertiliser and other inputs when he set up the orchard, along with advice and technical help. Mir Hasan Al Banna, the Dimla upazila agriculture officer, says mulching and modern irrigation have made his production more effective, and that other farmers in the area are being encouraged to try it.
