What Diabetic Patients Can Eat at Iftar Instead of Sweets

Diabetic patients who crave sweets can choose fruit, honey or jaggery in moderation instead of sugar-laden foods, after checking their blood sugar.

Fruits

The number of diabetic patients is rising around the world. Once blood sugar rises, it is quite difficult to keep it under control. Changing the diet is essential to keep blood sugar levels in check. That means cutting down on all sweet foods, as well as on fruits that contain carbohydrate and natural sugar.

Unfortunately, most diabetic patients have a tendency to eat sweets. Many cannot resist the temptation and eat them anyway, and later find that their blood sugar has suddenly risen. Solving this problem takes a little patience.

Food with added sugar causes not only diabetes but also heart disease, obesity and many other illnesses. So whenever you have a strong urge for something sweet, choose healthy food. Here is what to eat when you crave sweets.

Healthier ways to satisfy a sweet craving

All kinds of fruit contain some natural sugar, which is not harmful to health. Fruit protects both health and taste, so whenever you want something sweet, pick up a piece of fruit. But very sweet fruits should not be eaten.

If you want sugar in milk or yoghurt, use honey. That way you can enjoy something sweet without harming your health. But avoid eating too much honey.

You can use jaggery (gur) instead of sugar in various sherbets. Jaggery is much less harmful than sugar and is less processed, so a little jaggery can also curb the urge to eat sweets. But whatever way you satisfy the craving, first check whether your diabetes is under control.

When diabetes is at a high level, avoid all kinds of sweet food. And you must exercise to burn off extra calories; then there will be no risk of blood sugar rising. A diabetic patient must lead a disciplined life.
