A depression has formed over the Bay of Bengal, and the Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra seaports have been asked to hoist distant cautionary signal No 1. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department gave the warning on Monday, 28 September, in a special bulletin signed by meteorologist Dr Md Omar Faruk.

The department said the low over coastal south Myanmar moved towards the north Andaman Sea and the Myanmar coast, became a well-marked low and then intensified into a depression over the same area.

At 6am on Monday the depression lay 975 km south-east of Chattogram port, 900 km south-east of Cox's Bazar, 1,170 km south-east of Mongla and 1,075 km south-east of Payra.

It may move further north-northwest and strengthen. Maximum sustained wind within 44 km of its centre is about 40 km an hour, rising to 50 km an hour in gusts or squalls, and the sea is rough near the centre.

Fishing boats and trawlers in the northern Bay of Bengal have been told not to go into the deep sea until further notice, a warning that matters to fishermen and trawler owners at sea in the hilsa season.
