A fisherman on the Padma in Rajbari has netted two large catla and a baghair weighing 72 kg between them. The fish were caught in Seken Haldar's net at dawn on Monday (2 November) where the Padma and Jamuna meet, not far from Daulatdia ferry ghat.
Local fish trader Samrat Shahjahan Sheikh said Seken Haldar went out with his helpers before daybreak and the three fish were caught when they cast a net at the confluence. When the catch was weighed that morning at the fish wholesale market at Daulatdia's No 5 ferry ghat, one catla weighed 25 kg, the other 22 kg and the baghair 25 kg.
At an open auction there, the two catla sold for Tk 108,100 at Tk 2,300 a kg and the baghair for Tk 40,000 at Tk 1,600 a kg.
A buyer who works in Qatar then bought the catla from the wholesaler at Tk 2,500 a kg, for Tk 117,500, and the baghair at Tk 1,700 a kg for Tk 42,000. In all, the three fish fetched about Tk 160,000.
News of three big fish landed together drew traders and curious onlookers to the market.
The Padma-Jamuna confluence is a known haunt of large carp and catfish, and an occasional big catch can bring a fisher and the wholesalers a large sum in a single day, as well as showing how high river fish prices run. Agricare24 published the story citing Risingbd.
