Chattogram Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (CVASU) has succeeded in research to identify, using DNA barcoding technology, the species of Aedes mosquito that carry the dengue virus.

The achievement came from a research team in the university's Department of Pathology and Parasitology. The researchers say the work could play the most effective role in eliminating dengue.

As dengue spread and caused panic across the country, Professor Junayed Siddiki and his team collected Aedes mosquitoes and larvae from various parts of the Chattogram City Corporation area and began intensive research. Their research shows there are more than a hundred species of Aedes mosquito, of which only two carry the dengue virus.

They say that by identifying mosquitoes through this method and taking action accordingly, wasted money and needless panic can be avoided. He also stressed the need for care in carrying out the measures already taken at various levels.

Professor Dr Goutam Buddha Das, vice-chancellor of Chattogram Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, said continuing this research would also help in eliminating the dengue-carrying Aedes mosquito.
