Abul Hasan Faruk of Ichhapura village in Daudkandi upazila, Cumilla, has raised a passion fruit garden at his home from just four seedlings and now earns extra income from its fruit. Faruk is a dentist by profession, Krishi Shomoy reports.
He planted the four seedlings as a hobby around 2024. With care they grew quickly, new plants came up from them and the patch became a garden. He then built a trellis, and the vines have fruited heavily since.
Faruk said he has had two harvests so far, of 8 to 10 kilos each, and sells the fruit in the local market at Tk 600 to 800 a kilo. It started as a hobby, he said, but the yield and price suggest it could be a good source of income if grown in a planned way, and he wants to enlarge the garden.
Passion fruit was unfamiliar to local people at first. Curious visitors come every day to see the round fruit hanging from the trellis; some taste it and some ask about growing it at home.
Daudkandi upazila agriculture officer Nigar Sultana said warm, humid weather suits passion fruit and that with proper care the vines flower and fruit. There is potential for commercial cultivation in the country, she said, and nursery entrepreneurs in different areas are already importing seed to raise and sell seedlings on a trial basis.
