The mango harvest season has begun in Chuadanga. Deputy commissioner Lutfun Nahar formally opened the season at the Mohaldar Amrakanon orchard in the town on Wednesday (13 May).
Before the harvest, the deputy commissioner toured the Mohaldar orchard to check that good-quality, chemical-free mangoes reach the market. The season was then opened by picking mangoes from a tree. The event was organised by the district mango traders' and orchard owners' association.
Harvest calendar
Under the mango calendar, the season began on Wednesday with the harvesting of aanti, guti and Bombai mangoes. Harvest dates for the other varieties are staggered: Himsagar from 20 May, Langra from 25 May, Amrapali from 5 June, Fazli from 15 June, Haribhanga from 20 June, Banana from 22 June, Ashwina and BARI-4 from 30 June, Katimon from 5 July and Gourmati from 31 July.
Masudur Rahman Sarkar, deputy director of the district Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), said the mango is the king of fruits. The agriculture department will monitor orchards to make sure no owner harvests immature mangoes, and is working to ensure that mature, safe and chemical-free mangoes are sold in the market. He said mangoes grown in the district would again be able to help meet demand across the country this season.
After the opening, deputy commissioner Lutfun Nahar said orchard owners and traders must follow the set mango calendar. Anyone who deviates from it will face fines and legal action.
She added that strict action would be taken if there is proof of any chemical or formalin being added to mangoes, and that mobile courts of the district administration would monitor markets regularly.
Present were DAE deputy director (horticulture) Debashish Kumar Das, assistant commissioner Abdullah Al Shamim, press club president Nazmul Haque Swapan, mango growers' and traders' association president Abdul Kuddus Mohaldar, its vice-president and union parishad chairman Abdul Karim, Rintu Mohaldar, and local growers and traders.
This season mangoes have been grown on 2,203 hectares in Chuadanga district, with a production target of about 30,842 tonnes.
