With many-sided support from commercial companies, large and small poultry farmers in China have found new hope. Better feed quality has changed the economics of raising layers and producing eggs.
Extreme weather, steady success
In a village in Shandong, an eastern province of China, temperatures are extreme: 10 degrees below freezing in winter and 40 degrees in summer. Poultry farming might seem impossible, but it succeeds thanks to sustainable temperature control.
A ten-year-old farm has seen remarkable success for the past two years. Farmer Liu says this is thanks to quality feed and other support from the commercial company, which sometimes even arranges bank loans.
Two kilograms of feed, one of eggs
In Bangladesh, 2 kg of feed may yield 1 kg of eggs, but farmers find it hard to make a profit. On this Chinese farm, 2 kg of feed reliably produces 1 kg of eggs, leaving a profit of 2 RMB, or 26 Bangladeshi taka. The feed company says farmers' profit matters to it.
Li, New Hope sales manager in Shandong, said their feed has slightly higher protein, so eggshells are thicker, and the price is lower, and the company values farmers' profit most.
This policy could be a model for Bangladesh's poultry input companies.
