A five-day course on producing and marketing dairy products has ended at Chattogram Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (CVASU). Twenty-five field-level dairy entrepreneurs from Hathazari, Cumilla and Mirsarai took part in the hands-on training.

The closing ceremony of the refresher course was held on Thursday, 15 October, in the conference room of the university's administrative building. It was organised by CVASU's Poultry Research and Training Centre (PRTC) and the Department of Dairy and Poultry Science, and funded by the Department of Cooperatives' project to expand dairy cooperatives in milk-deficit upazilas.

Joining online as chief guest, Dr Rafiqul I Mohamed, secretary of the Rural Development and Cooperatives Division, said raising milk output and jobs by rearing improved crossbred cows in milk-deficit areas is a main aim of the project. He stressed keeping quality high in the storage, processing and export of milk and milk products.

Md Selim Fakir, registrar and director general of the Department of Cooperatives, said milk can be turned into yoghurt, sweets, butter, ghee, cheese, chhana and laban, and that field officials should be drawn in to help market these products. Project director and joint registrar Tofayel Ahmed confirmed that the trainees will be supplied with equipment to make dairy products.

CVASU vice-chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Yusuf Elahi Chowdhury urged the trainees to apply what they learned and to cut milk waste through proper storage and processing. PRTC director Professor Dr AKM Humayun Kabir presided.

The trainers included Professor Dr AKM Humayun Kabir, Tofayel Ahmed, DVM faculty dean Professor Gautam Kumar Debnath, department head Professor Dr Md Saiful Bari and Dr Mohammad Omar Faruk, acting deputy director of the Chattogram district artificial insemination centre, with other university teachers and officers.
