Every Monday and Thursday from the afternoon, a bird market sets up for a few hours at Dewanhat Mor in Chattogram city. Makeshift stalls along the road sell pigeons, ornamental and local and foreign birds, ducks and chickens, and bird-keeping supplies. A large part of the market trades in chicken breeds: Heza, Bahma, Hoyai, Japanese Bantam, Modern Game and more. Depending on breed, a rooster sells for Tk 1,000 to Tk 10,000.
According to the photo captions, a pair of Heza chickens from the hill districts, with reddish-golden feathers, sells for Tk 7,000. A pair of Modern Game roosters costs Tk 4,000 to 6,000 and a pair of Hoyai Japanese Bantams Tk 5,000 to 7,000. A pair of local fighter roosters goes for up to Tk 4,000. Chicks are sold too.
Buyers inspect a rooster's build and features before buying. Many buy the birds to keep at home; some, the report says, buy roosters for cockfighting contests.
