The Livestock, Bulk and Rural Carriers Association (LBRCA) has asked the Australian Government to make sure its proposed Australian Fuel Security Reserve, announced in May, puts diesel where farms and freight need it, Beef Central reported.
In its response to the government's consultation, the association proposed a Regional Fuel Storage Scheme with a five-year target of 250 million litres of additional, verified diesel storage in the regions, and asked that a quarter of the strategic reserve be invested there.
"Fuel sitting at a major coastal terminal is of limited value if it cannot reach a livestock carrier, farmer, processor or one of the many other key industries relying on diesel," said LBRCA President Wade Lewis. He said the proposal was not a reaction to the crisis in the Middle East but about resilience for communities and supply chains that floods, bushfires, road closures, damaged bridges, power outages or terminal problems can cut off.
The association wants regional carriers, farm businesses, fuel distributors, processors, councils, cooperatives and shared depots to be able to take part, with funding aimed at areas with heavy diesel use, few alternative supply routes and exposure to natural disasters.
