Tigress to be flown from Bihar to Buxa in West Bengal's first tiger reintroduction

A tigress from Bihar's Valmiki Tiger Reserve will be fitted with a satellite radio collar and moved via Gorakhpur and Hasimara to the Buxa forest, for release on 2 October.

The route for bringing a tigress by air from Bihar to the Buxa Tiger Reserve in north Bengal, West Bengal's first tiger reintroduction, was settled on Sunday, Ei Samay reports.

According to the forest department, staff at the Valmiki Tiger Reserve in Bihar's West Champaran district have been trying for five days to capture a particular tigress. Once she is darted and sedated, a satellite radio collar will be fitted on site.

She will then travel in a special cage by ambulance to the Indian Air Force base at Gorakhpur in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, be flown by helicopter to the Hasimara air base in north Bengal, and finish the journey to the Buxa forest by road.

The tigress is due to be released at Buxa on 2 October, Gandhi Jayanti, in the presence of India's environment minister Bhupender Yadav and West Bengal chief minister Suvendu Adhikari.
