A young man named Md Shakil, 25, has died of a snakebite while performing with a snake in Bhola.

He died while undergoing treatment at Manpura Upazila Health Complex at around 4am on Sunday, 6 July.

The incident had taken place earlier in the Taltoli area on the bank of the Meghna river, in ward 1 of South Sakuchia union in Manpura upazila of the district. Shakil was the son of Khokon Majhi of that village.

His uncle, Firoz Majhi, said that about 15 days earlier Shakil had caught the snake in front of a house about a kilometre from their home, and had been keeping it since then. On Saturday, 5 July, he was performing with the snake in the Taltoli area on the bank of the Meghna when it suddenly bit him on the left foot.

Local people then took him to an ojha (traditional healer) to try to remove the venom. When his condition worsened, he was admitted to Manpura Upazila Health Complex at around 9pm. Shakil died there while under treatment at around 4am on Sunday.

Ahsan Kabir, officer-in-charge (OC) of Manpura police station, confirmed the incident.
