Trees have been planted on the remote Majher Char in Bhola to protect against cyclones and extreme heat and to keep the environment in balance. The planting took place on Thursday afternoon (13 July) on Majher Char in Kachia union of Bhola Sadar upazila, at the initiative of the union parishad chairman.

In all, 2,900 saplings of various species were planted along both sides of a road on Majher Char.

UP chairman Zahurul Islam Nakib said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has called on everyone to plant trees to protect people from pollution, storms and floods. "Inspired by the Prime Minister's call, I got 2,000 saplings with my own money, 500 from an NGO and 400 from the government. Today I am planting them along both sides of the road," he said.

He said the trees will become an asset for local people once they grow, and urged them to look after the trees.

Former principals of Bhola Government College Professor Parvin Akhter and Professor Golam Zakaria, management department lecturer Md Ershad, and members of the union parishad were present.
