Mizan, a farmer in Rasulpur union, Char Fasson upazila, Bhola, has had success growing watermelons out of season. While neighbours are busy with rice and winter vegetables, rows of melons hang among the green vines in his field, with deep red, sweet and juicy flesh, Krishi Shomoy reports.

Mizan said many told him watermelons could not be grown at this time of year. He gathered information from YouTube and, on the agriculture office's advice, chose an off-season variety. Yields are good and so are market prices. With the right variety, good care and the agriculture department's advice, others can profit too, he said.

Local farmers say off-season watermelons are in demand, and many are now interested after seeing his crop.

Char Fasson upazila agriculture officer Najmul Huda said off-season watermelon can be profitable, and the department is giving Mizan technical advice and support.
