Twenty-nine slaughtered migratory birds of various species were recovered from Char Neyamatpur in Bhola. The birds were handed over to the Forest Department at around 8pm on Saturday (4 January).

Md Mahfuz Hasanain, acting fisheries officer of Bhola Sadar upazila, said the river police had been conducting a drive against illegal nets on the Meghna at Char Neyamatpur that afternoon. Some people dropped a sack and fled. Growing suspicious, the team went onto the char and found 29 slaughtered migratory birds of different species in the sack. "We brought the birds to the Tulatuli area of Bhola Sadar upazila and handed them over to the Forest Department," he said.

He added that every winter, hunters mix poison into the food of birds that come to the chars, knock them unconscious, then slaughter and sell them.
