Tree planting is not just a programme but a noble duty and a pledge to build a green world for future generations, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) director general Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui has said.

He was speaking on Thursday, 16 July, after opening the Tree Plantation Programme 2026 at Pilkhana in the capital. Under the theme "Let us adorn the country with trees, Bangladesh before all", he formally opened the week-long programme at midday by planting a coconut sapling on the west side of the Bir Uttam Anwar Hossain Parade Ground at BGB headquarters in Pilkhana.

Saying there is no alternative to tree planting in tackling climate change and the environmental crisis, the director general instructed that fruit, timber and medicinal trees be planted in a planned way at every BGB installation across the country.

He also urged every BGB member to plant at least one tree a year, saying the duty does not end with planting; the real success of the initiative depends on proper care and protection of the trees.

The director general said 73,000 trees will be planted this year at BGB headquarters and across the country. He called on everyone concerned to make the programme a success by planting trees in a planned way at suitable places in every BGB installation and caring for them regularly.
