A coordinated policy to stop the menace of touts around government hospitals is being drawn up quickly, State Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr M A Muhit said on Wednesday (14 October) morning while visiting Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in Dhaka.

Touts are not a problem of one hospital but a national disease, the state minister said. Misleading poor patients and those who travel from far away and taking them to private hospitals is plainly a crime, and law enforcement must act more firmly against it.

He said steps have been taken to make it harder to open private clinics and diagnostic centres anywhere around government hospitals, and to draw up specific rules on government doctors working at such places.

He expressed satisfaction with the hospital's overall cleanliness but ordered rubbish piled in some places removed quickly. Calling October and November high-risk months for dengue, he said staff must be fully alert so that other patients in hospital are not newly infected by Aedes mosquitoes.

On the stench from the morgue beside the main gate, he said instructions have been given to move it to a suitable place if space is found. A development project proposal (DPP) has been taken up to improve and modernise 21 morgues in the country, with work due to start this year.
