Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) has opened a modern liver cancer clinic where more than six departments will provide coordinated treatment. Vice-chancellor Professor Dr FM Siddiqui formally inaugurated it on Thursday, 15 October.
The hepatology department had been running the clinic on trial since August. The opening, held with the BMU Hepatology Alumni Association, was chaired by department chairman Professor Dr Md Shahinul Alam.
Liver cancer is now a significant public health problem, the vice-chancellor said, and outcomes improve when prevention, regular monitoring of high-risk patients, early diagnosis and timely treatment are in place. The clinic will help give patients organised, coordinated care and open new opportunities for research, he said.
A scientific seminar for Liver Cancer Awareness Month 2026 was held the same day at the university's Shaheed Dr Milton Hall. Papers were presented by Professor Dr Syed Akram Hossain, chairman of clinical oncology, Professor Dr Biswajit Bhowmik of radiology and imaging, and Dr Md Asaduzzaman Noor, associate professor of hepatobiliary surgery at Enam Medical College.
Former hepatology chairman Professor Dr Nooruddin Ahmed was special guest, and associate professor Dr SKM Nazmul Hasan moderated.
