Household data collection for Bangladesh's nationwide family card programme begins on Monday, 12 October. Trained government workers carrying identity cards will go door to door recording each family's socio-economic situation, and the information will decide which families need help most, the Daily Janakantha reports.
A letter sent on 8 October by the social welfare ministry's family card programme says data collection will run simultaneously in every area of the country from 12 October, under a new "Family Card Thana Database Data Collection Guideline, 2026".
Places of worship are being used to spread the word. The social welfare ministry has asked the religious affairs ministry to arrange announcements in mosques through the Islamic Foundation, and in temples, pagodas and churches through the Hindu, Buddhist and Christian religious welfare trusts.
In mosques, a three-minute announcement before Friday prayers will ask people to give accurate information and to beware of anyone seeking money. Two-minute announcements at other places of worship will ask people to check on elderly and disabled neighbours so that no one is missed.
Worth remembering: giving information costs nothing. Do not trust anyone who asks for money in return for putting a name on the list, and report them on 1098. The government has asked everyone to give accurate details of their family's real circumstances.
