"Shishu Swargo" centres for the combined treatment and rehabilitation of children with cerebral palsy will be set up in 22 districts this financial year, Health state minister Dr MA Muhit said on Tuesday, 6 October. He was speaking as chief guest at a World Cerebral Palsy Day event at the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital (NINS) in Agargaon, Dhaka, Sarabangla reports.
"A study found that at least 350,000 children in the country have cerebral palsy. Yet even at NINS, the leading institution, only 3,300 children could be treated in the outpatient department last year," he said. The rest, he said, are effectively invisible, kept hidden at home by family constraints and social pressures.
A government pilot project recently started in Dhaka's Korail slum is serving about 300 children who have been identified, the state minister said.
Community-based early case detection is the most urgent need for reaching children in remote areas, he said, and he called on everyone in the health sector to work together for a universal, inclusive health system for children with disabilities.
Housing and Public Works state minister Ahmed Sohel Manzur was special guest.
