Banana or Apple Every Day: Which Does You More Good?

Apples and bananas are both nutritious, and which suits you better depends on your age, health, lifestyle and daily nutritional needs.

Fruits

Eating a piece of fruit every day is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. But when choosing, many people ask whether an apple or a banana is better. Both are full of nutrients and good for the body. Which suits you better depends on your age, physical condition, lifestyle and daily nutritional needs.

So neither can be called better or worse than the other. Each has its own health benefits.

Apple

Apples always rank near the top of lists of healthy fruit. They contain plenty of dietary fibre, especially pectin, which helps keep the gut healthy. They also contain vitamin C, potassium and various antioxidants that help boost the body's immunity. Eating apples regularly helps keep cholesterol under control, and they are also useful for reducing the risk of heart disease and controlling weight. Apples are relatively low in calories and keep you full for longer.

Banana

Bananas are easy to find, cheap and one of the best fruits for quick energy. They are rich in potassium, vitamin B6, vitamin C, magnesium and natural sugars, which help give the body a fast energy boost.

Many people recommend eating a banana before or after exercise because it can restore energy quickly. The potassium also helps muscles work normally and helps control blood pressure. Bananas are especially good for children, teenagers, athletes and people who do a lot of physical work.

Weight, heart health and special needs

For weight control, apples have a slight edge, because their low calories and high fibre stave off hunger for longer. Bananas, with more natural sugar, give quicker energy, so people who exercise regularly or do heavy physical work may choose bananas.

Both fruits are good for the heart but work differently. The antioxidants in apples help keep the heart healthy, while the high potassium in bananas plays an important role in controlling blood pressure. So both can be eaten in turn for heart health.

People with diabetes can eat both apples and bananas in moderation on the advice of a doctor or nutritionist. Older people with dental problems can eat soft ripe bananas. Bananas are also a nutritious food for children's growth and development. For those who want to control their weight or eat more fibre, apples may be a good choice.

According to experts, rather than eating the same fruit every day, including apples, bananas, guava, papaya, oranges, mango, lychee or other seasonal fruit over the week gives the body a range of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

Nutritionists say that while apples are slightly ahead for weight control and disease prevention, bananas work well for quick energy, potassium and restoring energy after exercise. So both fruits can be kept in the diet in moderation to stay healthy. The Bengali report cited Verywell Health, the Times of India and HealthShots as sources.
