When Is the Best Time to Eat a Banana?

Bananas are highly nutritious, but when you eat them affects how well the body uses their nutrients.

Fruits

The banana is a highly nutritious fruit. Rich in potassium, vitamin B6, fibre and antioxidants, it is good for people of all ages, from children to the elderly. But eating a banana is not enough; when you eat it also matters. According to nutritionists, the body absorbs its nutrients best when it is eaten at the right time, while eating it at the wrong time can cause discomfort or digestive problems for some people.

Mid-morning is best

Experts say the most suitable time to eat a banana is after breakfast and before 11am, that is, between 8am and 11am. Metabolism is relatively more active at this time, so the banana's carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals are easily used and give the body quick energy.

Eating a banana in the middle of the morning also keeps you full for longer, reducing the urge to eat unnecessary food and helping you stay productive until lunch.

Before and after exercise

For people who go to the gym or exercise regularly, the banana is an ideal food. Eating one 30 to 60 minutes before exercise gives the body quick energy from its natural sugars. After exercise, its potassium and carbohydrates can help tired muscles recover and make up for lost energy.

Empty stomach and night-time

Many people eat a banana on an empty stomach as soon as they wake up, but this may not suit everyone. It can cause gas, heartburn or stomach discomfort in some people. Those with digestive problems or a tendency to acidity may feel better eating bananas with other food or after breakfast.

Many people also have a habit of eating fruit after dinner. But a banana at night can slow digestion for some, causing a heavy feeling or discomfort. Some people with colds, coughs or sinus problems feel their symptoms get worse when they eat bananas at night. Although scientific evidence on this is limited, the body's response can vary from person to person.

Besides eating it on its own, having a banana with yoghurt, oats, nuts or peanut butter gives more balanced nutrition, makes blood sugar rise more slowly and keeps you full for longer.
