Apple has removed one of the world's most popular Quran apps in China following a request from officials there.
The Quran Majeed app is hugely popular worldwide. It is available on the App Store, has about 150,000 reviews and is used by millions of Muslims around the world.
The BBC has learned that the app was removed because it contained illegal religious text. The Chinese government, when contacted, has not yet commented.
Developer seeks talks with Chinese authorities
The news was first published by Apple Censorship, a website that monitors apps on App Stores around the world.
The app's maker, PDMS, said in a statement: "According to Apple, our app Quran Majeed has been removed from the China App Store because it had some content that was illegal." It added: "We are trying to get in touch with the Cyberspace Administration of China and relevant Chinese authorities to resolve this issue."
The company says it has about one million users in China.
The Chinese Communist Party officially recognises Islam as a religion in the country. However, China is accused of human rights abuses, and even genocide, against Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang province.
