Kinetic Process Technology India has introduced an artificial intelligence (AI) system that runs a rice mill on its own, adjusting the process to the output the operator asks for. The first installation in India had completed its first week of operation when the company announced it, according to Samresh Chatterjee, the firm's director of sales and marketing.

The aim is to reduce the manual control that most mills still depend on. An operator sets the desired product parameters, for example the specification for export-grade rice or for rice sold in the domestic market, and the system manages the milling process to deliver that output consistently.

Once the parameters are configured, Chatterjee said, the technology can run routine plant operations autonomously for 24 hours at a stretch. The system has already been used successfully in China before being brought to India.

The company expects the technology to gain momentum in the Indian rice milling industry over the next six months and plans to expand its deployment across the country.

For millers serving both export and domestic buyers, the attraction is being able to switch between product specifications without relying on operators' judgement for each change, while keeping quality steady.
