World Environment Day will be observed and the environment fair opened on Wednesday, 25 June. The national tree planting campaign and tree fair will also be inaugurated that day.
Farhina Ahmed, secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, gave the information at a press conference at the Secretariat on 23 June. Syeda Rizwana Hasan, adviser to the ministry, was present.
It was said at the event that World Environment Day is observed on 5 June every year, but this year it will be observed on 25 June because of the Eid holidays.
Slogans and programme
The secretary said the interim government is working tirelessly to ensure a liveable environment by controlling pollution, tackling the adverse effects of climate change and developing forest resources. To increase public participation, World Environment Day, the environment fair, the national tree planting campaign and the tree fair have been organised this year, as every year.
She said this year's World Environment Day is being observed with the slogan "No more plastic pollution, now is the time to stop it", and the national tree planting campaign with the theme "Let's plant planned forests, build a green Bangladesh".
Farhina Ahmed said Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus has agreed to attend the inaugural ceremony as chief guest at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre at 10am on 25 June. The National Award for Wildlife Conservation 2025, National Environment Award 2024 and National Award for Tree Plantation 2024 will be presented, and profit-share cheques will be handed to social forestry beneficiaries. The environment fair at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar will run from 25 to 27 June and the tree fair from 25 June to 24 July, open daily from 9am to 9pm.
Events across the country
World Environment Day will be celebrated in all districts and upazilas, at 100 educational institutions in Dhaka city and at two educational institutions in every district. Children's art, debate and slogan competitions, environmental seminars and awareness seminars for industrial entrepreneurs are being organised, the secretary said.
She said tree fairs will be held at national, divisional, district and upazila level as every year, with art and essay competitions for children. Saplings will be distributed at educational institutions, banners will be put up at important places in Dhaka city, and text messages will be sent through mobile phone operators.
