What to Eat to Avoid Illness in Winter

As the weather cools and colds and fevers spread, four foods can help the body build resistance to winter illness.

Crops

The weather has turned much cooler, especially at night, and many people are already suffering from colds, coughs and fever.

As winter sets in, various infections take hold in the body, so it pays to give a little extra attention to what you eat. Here are the foods to eat more of to stay healthy at this time of year.

Citrus fruits

Oranges, lemons and grapes are citrus fruits, and they are rich in vitamin C.

This vitamin helps keep the body healthy from within. Fighting disease requires immunity, and eating these fruits provides that strength from the inside.

Yoghurt

Yoghurt is rich in probiotics, which look after the body and help boost immunity.

Yoghurt gives the body extra strength to fight illness. Eat plenty of sour yoghurt to stay healthy in winter.

Ginger

Ginger not only adds flavour to cooking but is equally good for the body, and it is especially useful in warding off colds and coughs.

Use ginger in cooking, and also drink ginger tea. It can relieve a tickly cough, sore throat and other problems.

Green vegetables

Colourful vegetables start arriving in the markets as winter comes. Green vegetables contain minerals, vitamins and antioxidants.

They help strengthen the body's resistance and also reduce the risk of infectious diseases.
