The Forest Department has recovered the carcass of a wild elephant on the Jhenaigati border in Sherpur. Forest staff recovered the body on the afternoon of Thursday, 2 June, after being informed.

The Forest Department believes the elephant died on Wednesday night. The cause of death has not yet been confirmed.

Locals said herds of wild elephants had been staying in hills along the Jhenaigati border for about 20 days. With food scarce in the hills, the herds came into villages after dark and destroyed farmers' ripe paddy, vegetable gardens and other crops. However, they could not say what might have killed this elephant.

Makrul Ahmed, range officer of the Forest Department's Rangtia range, said locals informed them after seeing the carcass near pillar 1101 in the Berberi area, north-west of the Gazni Abakash tourist spot in Sherpur. The elephant is thought to have died the previous night, and details will be known after a post-mortem.
