About 1,000 chickens at a poultry farm in Darshana, Chuadanga, have died in an attack by a wild animal under cover of darkness. The farm's owner says he has suffered losses of an estimated Tk 4 to 5 lakh.

The incident happened on Friday, 31 July, at a farm called Hasan Poultry near Darshana Halt station in Damurhuda upazila of the district.

Farm owner Md Hasan said his farm currently holds about 18,000 to 20,000 chickens of different breeds. On Friday night a wild animal got into the farm and attacked the birds. When he went to the farm in the morning he found hundreds of dead chickens, and a count later showed about 1,000 had died.

He said the incident had cost him about Tk 4 to 5 lakh, and after such a loss he is deeply worried about keeping the farm running.

Locals said wild animals are seen moving about the area from time to time, and they demanded the necessary measures to protect farms and livestock.
