A geologist has been injured after being lashed by an octopus's tentacles at a beach in western Australia. He described it as the "angriest" octopus.

A video that has gone viral online shows an octopus in clear, shallow water striking geologist Lance Karlson with its tentacles. The octopus later chased Karlson again and struck him on the arm, and also hit him on the neck and back.

Karlson, a former lifeguard, told an Australian news outlet that he and his family were staying at a resort on Geographe Bay. When he went to dive in the water near the resort, he saw what he thought was a leaf fish hitting a seagull with its tail.

Soon afterwards he discovered it was not a leaf fish but an octopus. When he went closer with his two-year-old daughter to film it, it suddenly started coming towards them.

"The octopus started chasing us, which was really a shock," Karlson said.

Later, when he went swimming alone, the octopus found him again and struck him with its tentacles.

"My goggles fogged up, the water suddenly turned murky, and I remember being stunned," he said.

The blows left red marks on Karlson's skin. He said the marks eased after he poured a cola drink on them.

Karlson usually uses vinegar to relieve stings from sea creatures, but he had nothing like vinegar at hand when the octopus struck. He knew, however, that anything acidic would bring relief, so he used cola and found that it worked.
