In West Rampura in the capital is a successful rooftop farm, full of fruit and crops, that is two decades old. Over time, one generation after another has taken it up, and it meets much of the family's nutritional and emotional needs.
Two roofs, one farm
Two buildings stand on five kathas of land, one 30 years old and the other built much later. Together the two roofs now form one farm. It was started by retired aviation official Muktar Ahmed.
The daughter carries it on
His daughter, Bangladesh Bank officer Umme Ammara Sweety, got her love of farming from her father and has taken up rooftop farming herself; it is her creative outlet. She says it seems to be in her blood: her own home has two balconies full of plants, and she feels an inner urge to grow them.
Green on two levels
The roof is now green on two levels, with flowers, fruit and vegetables in every season. The next generation is also being inspired, understanding how this greenery supports a good life.
