District Forest Department officials have rescued a vulture of a nearly extinct native species in Madaripur. The bird was rescued on Monday afternoon from the vegetable market lane of Puran Bazar in the district town.

Forest officials said the bird would be treated and then sent to the wildlife rescue centre in Khulna.

Madaripur District Forest Officer Tapas Sengupta said local people spotted the vulture at the Puran Bazar vegetable market in the afternoon and informed them. "We went there and rescued the endangered bird. We then called the Sadar upazila livestock officer, and the bird is being treated," he said.

Madaripur Sadar Upazila Livestock Officer Dr Abu Bakar Siddique said the bird looked somewhat tired. "We have not given it any medicine yet, but we have brought different kinds of meat to feed it. We hope it will overcome its fatigue and recover after eating. If it still needs medicine, we will arrange that."

Tapas Sengupta said the Khulna wildlife rescue centre had been informed and would come to take the vulture for release in the Sundarbans.
