Four Signs Your Child May Be Short of Vitamin C

Repeated colds, dry skin, slow-healing wounds and joint pain can point to vitamin C deficiency in children, which vitamin C-rich foods can help.

Fruits

Vitamin C is vital for the body and does several jobs. A shortage of it can cause various physical problems, so adults should look after their children's health as well as their own, or the child may develop complications.

Frequent colds and coughs

Vitamin C boosts the body's immunity, so naturally a shortage weakens the immune system, and problems such as fever, colds and coughs follow. If your child keeps getting these, be sure to give them foods containing vitamin C.

Dry skin

Vitamin C protects the skin from oxidative damage. When the body is short of it, skin problems increase and the skin may become dry. If your child's skin suddenly becomes dry, give them vitamin C-rich foods as well as applying moisturiser.

Wounds that are slow to heal

Vitamin C helps make collagen, and the protein collagen helps wounds heal. If a wound on your child's skin is not healing quickly, pay attention. First of all give them foods with vitamin C, and include some protein-rich foods in their diet as well. Then the child will recover quickly.

Joint pain

Bones do not weaken only from a lack of vitamin D and calcium: eating too little vitamin C also weakens them, and can even cause severe joint pain. If your child has joint pain, include vitamin C foods in their diet.

Foods rich in vitamin C include:

  • lemon
  • apple
  • guava
  • mango
  • amloki (Indian gooseberry)
  • broccoli
  • spinach

If the signs above do not change even after eating these foods, take the child to a doctor quickly and give vitamin C supplements on their advice.
