The government has decided to import 100,000 tonnes (one lakh tonnes) of non-basmati parboiled rice from Vietnam on a government-to-government (G2G) basis. It will cost Tk 515,04,96,000, putting the price of each kilogram at Tk 51.50.

The purchase was approved at a meeting of the cabinet committee on government purchase chaired by Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury on Wednesday, 12 August, following a proposal from the Ministry of Food.

Under the proposal, the rice will be imported from Vietnam Southern Food Corporation (Vinafood-2), whose address is 333 Tran Hung Dao, Cau Kho ward, Ho Chi Minh City.

One tonne is 1,000kg, so 100,000 tonnes is 10 crore kg. On that basis each kilogram costs Tk 51.50. The purchase price has been set at USD 416 a tonne.
