A man in India killed his wife and two children and then took his own life after a dispute over a pet dog. The incident took place on Sunday, 20 August, in Ujjain district of Madhya Pradesh. Earlier in the same state, two neighbours were shot dead after a dispute over a pet dog.

Police sub-divisional officer Mahendra Singh Parmar said that at around 1am on Sunday, Dilip Pawar, 45, a resident of the Badnagar area of Ujjain district, was beating his pet dog. His wife Ganga, 40, daughter Neha, 17, and son Yogendra, 14, tried to stop him. Enraged, Dilip attacked them with a sharp weapon and killed his wife and two children.

Mahendra Singh said Dilip's two other sons fled the house to save their lives. Dilip then killed himself with the same sharp weapon. Police went to the scene after being informed at around 5am, recovered the bodies and sent them to the hospital morgue for post-mortem.

According to police, Dilip had been unemployed for several months and often drank heavily, and was mentally depressed because he was out of work. However, whether he was drunk when he killed his wife and children cannot be said for certain until the investigation is complete.

Earlier, on Thursday, 18 August, a man in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, was accused of shooting dead two neighbours after a dispute over a pet dog.
