The government has leased three long-closed state-owned jute mills to two private companies to restart them.
Agreements between the Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) and Pran-RFL Group and Hamko Group were signed on Tuesday (11 August) in the presence of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, the prime minister's deputy press secretary Mostafa Zulfikar Hasan Shiplu said.
Under the agreements, Pran-RFL Group has leased Jatiya Jute Mills Limited in Sirajganj and Star Jute Mills Limited in Khulna, while Hamko Group has leased Platinum Jubilee Jute Mills Limited in Khulna.
BJMC chairman Brigadier General Md Kabir Uddin Sikder signed for the corporation, company secretary Aminur Rahman for Pran-RFL Group and managing director ATM Mostafa for Hamko Group.
Investment and jobs
The three mills will restart under private management. Once running they will employ at least 11,629 people, with total investment of about Tk 619 crore and a likely combined annual turnover of about Tk 1,175 crore.
About Tk 157 crore is planned for Jatiya Jute Mills at Raipur in Sirajganj. It will create 5,238 jobs once running, and its annual turnover could reach about Tk 500 crore.
About Tk 250 crore will be invested in Star Jute Mills at Dighalia in Khulna. It will create 5,238 jobs, with a turnover target of about Tk 500 crore a year.
About Tk 212 crore is planned for Platinum Jubilee Jute Mills at Khalishpur in Khulna. It will create at least 1,153 jobs, with a likely annual turnover of about Tk 175 crore.
The ceremony was told that 20 of the BJMC's 25 idle mills are to be restarted under private management on lease. Leases for 14 mills have been completed and possession handed over, and production has begun at nine of them.
Those present included Commerce, Industries and Textiles and Jute Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir, Textiles and Jute State Minister Shariful Alam, Textiles and Jute Secretary Sharf Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury, Pran-RFL Group chairman and CEO Ahsan Khan Chowdhury, and senior officials of the BJMC and the leasing companies.
