The Bangladesh Non-Government Educational Institutions Third-Class Employees' Council held a tree-planting programme and distributed Eid gifts to mark Mujib Year and the golden jubilee of independence.

The programme was held on the morning of Friday, 16 July, on the premises of Donia University College in the capital.

Before that, a discussion meeting was held in the college auditorium, where speakers set out various demands of third-class employees of non-government educational institutions and sought the prime minister's intervention to meet them.

Their demands are: a minimum 11th pay grade for third-class employees and more third-class staff in proportion to student numbers; renaming posts to create the positions of office superintendent, administrative officer and accounts officer; and prompt advanced training in computers and other subjects for professional development.

They also demanded speedy implementation of the Ministry of Education's service rules of 2012 and, in line with the notification, a place for one employee member on managing committees or governing bodies; and promotion to teacher, office superintendent, administrative officer or accounts officer based on educational qualifications and experience. They further demanded the nationalisation of all MPO-listed educational institutions.

The event was chaired by Abdur Rahman Apon, general secretary of the council's Dhaka Metropolitan South unit. The acting principal of Donia University College, Md Abdul Jabbar, was chief guest. Special guests included former student leader Abdur Rob Howlader and Awami League leader Md Rafiqul Islam Talukder Montu, and Shahanaz Parvin, Md Mizanur Rahman and Md Solaiman were among others present.
