Two schoolchildren named Aditya and Jannat have died after being bitten by snakes in Thakurgaon. The incidents took place at separate places on Thursday night (5 September).

Jannat, 12, was the daughter of Jakirul Islam of Danarhat Syedpur village in Sadar upazila.

Family members said Jannat was asleep at home when a snake bit her suddenly after midnight. She felt pain, and the venom gradually spread through her whole body. She died on the way to hospital. She was a class seven student at Syedpur High School.

Elsewhere, Aditya, the seven-year-old son of Sanatan of Iyakubpur village, was also bitten by a snake while asleep. He vomited several times. Family members rushed him to Thakurgaon General Hospital, and when his condition worsened doctors referred him to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital for better treatment. He died on the way.

Aditya was a class two student at Kalukhetra Government Primary School in the same union.

Sadar upazila nirbahi officer Belayet Hossain said he had heard of the two students' deaths. "Such unwanted deaths are not desirable," he said.

He advised everyone to be more careful.
