The nilgai is a mammal extinct in Bangladesh. Once seen around Rangpur and Dinajpur, it is now on the way to extinction. It is found in most states of India and in border areas of Pakistan and Nepal.
At 4pm on 26 November, a male nilgai of an endangered species, earthy grey in colour, was suddenly seen in Minapur village, a border area of Haripur upazila in Thakurgaon district, having come from India.
Local people immediately informed the police, and Haripur police station SI Abu Isa and people from the area tried to catch it and managed to capture it. Hearing of the capture, members of the local Karigaon BGB camp arrived, and the police handed the nilgai over to the BGB.
Injured trying to escape
Abdul Jalil, an eyewitness from Minapur, said local people and police tried to catch the nilgai. Refusing to be caught, it tried desperately to escape in various ways but failed and was injured. After police captured it with local people's help, it was handed to the BGB.
Local resident Jamshed Ali said: "I had never seen a nilgai; today I saw one for the first time, but in the end it hurt me. The nilgai was badly injured trying to save itself. Later I heard it died while being treated."
Naib Subedar Kafil Uddin of the Karigaon BGB camp said they went there on hearing about the nilgai. A male nilgai had crossed the barbed-wire fence at the 2-S area of border pillar 353 and entered Minapur village, and police and villagers then caught it.
"When we got the nilgai it was injured and wounded. We immediately took it to the upazila livestock hospital. It died under treatment from excessive bleeding," he said.
Md Khorshed Alam, adviser to the voluntary organisation Parent Foundation, said the nilgai died of heavy bleeding from its many wounds. The endangered animal should not have been chased and wounded to death like this; rather, it was our duty to capture it properly and conserve it. If animals keep dying at human hands like this, it will not be good for us at all.
Haripur police station officer-in-charge (OC) Tajul Islam said they rescued the nilgai with the help of local people and immediately handed it to Karigaon BGB.
