Two people have died of snakebite in Baliadangi, Thakurgaon. According to the report, they were bitten at dawn on Sunday (7 July) in the Chautaki and Bamunia Nital Doba areas of the upazila.

The dead are Shahara Banu (40), wife of Md Joynal of the Bamunia Nital Doba area in Paria union, and Suvatra (9), daughter of Akalu Chandra of Chautaki village in Dhontola union. It is not known what kind of snake bit them.

Family sources said a snake bit Suvatra while she was asleep in bed at dawn. Feeling pain, she told her mother that something had bitten her, and her mother then saw a snake leaving the house, though she could not say what kind. An ojha was called to treat her. Her condition worsened and she died around 5am. Suvatra was a class three pupil at Chautaki Government Primary School.

Meanwhile, the report says Shahara Begum was suddenly bitten by a snake while doing housework on Saturday evening. She was taken to Baliadangi Health Complex around 8pm and died while being treated.

Dr Md Ahaduzzaman Sajib, resident medical officer at Baliadangi Upazila Health Complex, said the woman was late in coming to hospital, so timely treatment could not be given, and she died as a result.

Baliadangi police station officer-in-charge (OC) Firoz Kabir confirmed the two deaths and said police had been sent to both places.
