Sailors of the Thai navy have rescued four cats from a ship damaged by fire in the Andaman Sea. Their humane act has drawn praise on social media.

On Tuesday a fire broke out on a fishing boat named Phamonsin Nava 10, and the boat began to sink. All eight crew members jumped into the sea to save their lives and were rescued by another fishing boat nearby.

Navy personnel were sent to check whether any oil was leaking at the scene of the fire, and there they discovered the cats trapped on the boat.

Wichit Pukdilon, an officer of the navy's air and coastal defence command, said: "I zoomed my camera in on the boat and saw one or two cats raising their heads."

A sailor swam to the boat and came back carrying the cats on his shoulders.

The cats are reported to be unhurt and healthy, and the sailors who rescued them are now looking after them.

A Facebook post about the rescue has drawn more than 2,500 comments, which are full of praise for the rescuers.
