Four mother sea turtles have been fitted with satellite tags and released on the Teknaf beach in Cox's Bazar for research.

The turtles were released around midday on Monday and Tuesday (11 February) on Uttar Shilkhali beach at Baharchhara, Teknaf, on the initiative of the CODEC Nature and Life project.

Project director Dr Shital Kumar Nath confirmed the matter. He said satellite tags were fitted to two turtles each on Tuesday and Monday to gain accurate knowledge of sea turtles' behaviour. IUCN provided technical support for the work.

Mother sea turtles come to the beach every year in the breeding season to lay eggs. Over two days, four of them were held for research, fitted with satellite tags and released on the beach. Mother turtles were also held for research in the same way last year.

Since 2020, various activities have been carried out to conserve forests, wildlife and biodiversity in the Teknaf Wildlife Sanctuary area. Turtles are being conserved through five hatcheries on the coastal chars from Teknaf to Madar Bunia. As part of this work, satellite tags are being fitted to the turtles to learn more about their behaviour.
