A baby elephant has swum across the Naf River from Myanmar and entered the Gholarchar area of Shah Porir Dwip in Teknaf. It stands about seven feet tall.

Cox's Bazar divisional forest officer (DFO, South) Sarwar Alam said the calf entered the Jhau Bagan at Gholarchar on Shah Porir Dwip on Monday morning (3 July).

He said a herd of elephants is thought to have come down from the hills in Myanmar to drink from the Naf. The calf may have gone into the river after being chased by people, and then swum into Bangladesh. It is estimated to be about eight months old.

According to the latest information, he said, the calf was still in the Gholarchar Jhau Bagan, and forest department and Coast Guard personnel were working to return it to the forest.

Several elephants have previously swum the Naf and come ashore at Shah Porir Dwip and Jaliapara on the Bangladesh border.
