Sylhet's farming picture is changing. Where most land once lay fallow, efforts are now under way everywhere to bring farmland under cultivation. In recent years, farming and other agricultural ventures have grown in Sylhet, and one farm after another is being added alongside field crops. Livestock and dairy farming have drawn a positive response.
From a dozen to a hundred
According to the upazila livestock office, five years ago there were only 10 to 12 dairy farms in the whole upazila; now there are more than a hundred. The programme saw proof in Janaiya village, Biswanath upazila, where a few years ago there was not a single farm and now there are several.
A farm like a bungalow
Among them, Akbar Hossain Kismot's Al Hossain farm is unusual. It does not look like a cow farm at all but a well-decorated bungalow, where the cows are raised. The farm started with just four cows.
