Which Superfoods Help Keep Diabetes Under Control?

A healthy diet is essential to controlling diabetes, and a handful of fibre-rich foods can help keep blood sugar in check.

Vegetables

People with diabetes can now be found in almost every household. An irregular lifestyle is the main thing that raises the risk of the disease, and once someone has diabetes, keeping it under control is a challenge. Many cannot control it even with regular medication.

The main reasons are lack of exercise and poor eating habits. Nutritious food is therefore essential: however much medicine or insulin you take, you will not bring diabetes under control if your diet is wrong. Some foods, often called superfoods, should be on the plate of every diabetes patient. Eaten regularly, they make it easier to keep diabetes in check.

Greens and fruit

In this season people with diabetes can eat green vegetables such as spinach or cabbage. These are very good for the body: rich in fibre and low in carbohydrate, and full of antioxidants, which are especially good for diabetes patients.

Jam (black plum) and strawberries are also suitable. Both fruits are rich in fibre and antioxidants. Sour fruits can be eaten as well to meet the body's need for vitamin C, but avoid fruit that is very sweet.

Avocado contains plenty of healthy fat and little carbohydrate, and eating it raises good cholesterol. The fruit is expensive but very good for health.

Nuts, seeds and oats

Nuts and various seeds contain healthy fat, protein and fibre, which help keep blood sugar under control. People with diabetes can regularly eat measured amounts of almonds and walnuts along with chia seeds.

Instead of rice and bread, diabetes patients can make tasty dishes with oats. Oats are easy to digest, and their fibre keeps you full for longer and helps control blood sugar.

Spices, pulses and sweet potato

Cinnamon, a kitchen spice, works like a medicine. Using it in food increases the effectiveness of insulin and helps control blood sugar levels.

Turmeric's health benefits are well known, and it works very well for people with diabetes because it contains anti-inflammatory compounds that help the body take up insulin.

Peas and mashkalai (black gram) are rich in fibre and protein, which help keep blood sugar levels under control.

Sweet potato also has many health benefits and is especially good for diabetes patients, because it contains plenty of fibre and antioxidants that help control blood sugar.
