Forest guards have arrested a deer poacher named Chhagir Khan, 40, during a drive in the Sundarbans.

He was held on Saturday morning (4 April) at Kochikhali Dimer Char in the Sharankhola range. Four thousand feet of snare wire, a scale for weighing meat and 2 kg of white polythene were seized from him.

The arrested poacher, Chhagir Khan, is the son of Rustam Ali Khan of South Char Duani village in Patharghata upazila, Barguna.

The forest department said guards on regular patrol at Dimer Char in Kochikhali on Saturday morning saw snares laid in the forest. They searched the area and caught Chhagir Khan red-handed. They seized 4,000 feet of snares, the meat scale, 2 kg of white polythene, plastic sacks, rice, lentils and other items from him.

Five other deer poachers fled after sensing the presence of the forest guards.

Dr Rezaul Karim, divisional forest officer of the Sundarbans East division, said a case had been filed under the forest law against the poacher arrested with the snares at Dimer Char. The arrested man would be sent to court in Bagerhat on Sunday morning, he said.
