The Coast Guard has seized 110kg of deer meat from Thakurbari ghat in the Sundarbans and detained a young man, Md Ariful Sardar, 24, on charges of deer poaching.
Lieutenant Commander Siam-Ul-Haque, media officer at the Coast Guard headquarters in Dhaka, gave the information.
Poachers fled leaving the meat
He said that acting on a tip-off, the Coast Guard conducted a drive on Tuesday afternoon in the Thakurbari ghat area of Nalian in the western Sundarbans. Sensing the Coast Guard's presence, several deer poachers fled, leaving deer meat in two boats.
The two boats were then searched and 110kg of deer meat was seized. One poacher was detained after a chase.
The seized deer meat and the detained young man have been handed over to the Forest Department's Nalian Forest Office.
