The forest department has seized 42 kg of deer meat from the Hular Bharani canal in the Sundarbans. Four poachers fled, and a case has been filed against them under the forest act.

Surajit Chowdhury, officer of the Dhangmari station in the Chandpai range of the East Sundarbans division, said that acting on a tip-off, forest guards raided the Hular Bharani canal in the forest before dawn on Thursday. Sensing the guards' presence, the poachers fled deep into the forest.

The guards then searched the boat they had left behind and seized 42 kg of deer meat, along with the boat the poachers had been using.

A case has been filed under the forest act against the fugitive poachers, he said, and the meat was destroyed by burning with kerosene and then buried.
