Tractor maker Steyr is part of a research project exploring hydrogen-powered tractors fuelled by hydrogen produced on the farm. The Hytrac project, led by Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien), aims to show a practical path to low-carbon farm machinery and greater farm energy independence.
The research tractor is based on a Steyr Expert, a 100-140 hp tractor, and will use a direct-injection hydrogen internal combustion engine with an electric power-split continuously variable transmission (eCVT) developed by Austrian engineering group VDS Holding. Implements can be driven electrically from the tractor's high-voltage battery, developed by Voltfactory. The goal is continuous power comparable with the diesel donor tractor at close to zero emissions.
The system would link the tractor with on-farm hydrogen production from existing energy sources, storage and refuelling. Hytrac follows the Steyr FCtrac fuel-cell concept unveiled in July 2024 with TU Wien. Steyr lists zero emissions at the point of use, high efficiency and long working times among the design's benefits.
