Potato is one of the most widely eaten foods in the world. Whether as french fries, crisps, aloor dom or a stuffed paratha, many people report discomfort afterwards — a bloated feeling, or gas. The question is whether eating a lot of potato really causes it.
Senior gastroenterologist Arul Prakash says there is no single answer: it cannot be settled with a yes or a no.
"Potato is not among the foods observed to cause the most gas in most people. But in certain circumstances, eating a lot of potato can leave some people feeling bloated," Dr Prakash explained. He also pointed out that the effect differs from person to person.
Specialists say potato is not the sole cause of such stomach trouble. How the dish was cooked, how much was eaten and the person's general health all play a part.
Starch has a role too. Rice and potato both contain starch, and some people are sensitive to particular starchy foods.
The United States National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) explains the process. According to the institute, gas is produced when carbohydrate that is not fully digested in the small intestine is broken down by bacteria through fermentation.
"This process of fermentation naturally produces gases such as hydrogen, methane and carbon dioxide. Excessive fermentation can cause bloating, abdominal discomfort and gas," the NIDDK says. Potato is one of Bangladesh's largest crops, and consumer beliefs of this kind feed directly into demand.
